Bangladesh Foreign Minister Visits Burma - 2002-11-19

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh , M Morshed Khan , is beginning a three day visit to the neighboring country Burma. During his visit Mr Khan is expected to meet Burmese leaders including the Head of the State and the Foreign Minister.

Amongst other things Foreign Minister Khan will be discussing the repatriation issue of about 21,000 Rohinga refugees who are still living in Bangladesh in a very miserable situation. UNCHR is also insisting on their repatriation.

In 1990 nearly 250,000 Burmese Rohinga crossed into Bangladesh after a military operation in Burma. Although most of the refugees have gone back to their country , the rest are being repatriated in a very slow pace.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh is also expected to discuss other bilateral issues including trade and ecomony matters.
