Bangladesh Denies Europen Parliament's Concern on Human Rights Allegations - 2002-11-23


Officials in Bangladesh , while refering to a news item published in local newspapers , say that Bangladesh thinks the concern expressed in the European Parliament about the human rights violations in Bangladesh is not neutral and well founded. They say that the army was called in to maintain law and order situation when criminal offenses continued increasing. They also say that the allegations on people dying under army custody are being investigated.

In another development the government is getting ready to file cases on Firearm Act against those people who have not deposited their legal arms. With the last date expired on November 21 , and with very little arms deposited , the government has taken this decisions. Sources say that in Dhaka alone there are 70,000 licensed arms of which only 12,698 have been deposited.
