Veteran Communist Leader in West Bengal Rejects the Idea of Merger - 2002-12-06


A veteran communist leader and the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu rejects the idea of possible merger of the two communist parties . He says that the two parties are divided on ideological lines and there could not be any reunification. However both can work to achieve common goals.

The proposal for the merger of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party Marxist of India ( CPIM) came from another veteran communist leader Mr Dhirendranath Mukherjee of the Communist Party of India ( CPI). Mr Mukherjee thinks that in order combat BJP and the Congress Party they need to be unified. They were divided on Pro-Moscow and Pro- Beijing lines since early sixties.
