Palestinian Women Killed in Violence in Gaza Strip - 2002-12-08

Palestinian witnesses say Israeli troops have shot and killed a Palestinian woman and wounded three of her children in the southern Gaza Strip.

The witnesses say the victims were walking through a Palestinian refugee camp today (Sunday) when they came under fire.

It is unclear what provoked the shooting. The Israeli army is investigating the incident.

Nearby, Israeli soldiers opened fire today (Sunday) on six Palestinian militants approaching the Jewish settlement of Rafah Yam in the southern Gaza Strip. Four of the militants were wounded and the other two escaped.

The violence comes after Israeli forces killed 10 Palestinians, including two U-N workers, Friday during a fierce gunbattle at the Palestinian's Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.

The fighting erupted when Israeli troops, tanks and helicopters launched a pre-dawn raid. Israel said the operation targeted a local militant leader involved in an earlier attack that killed three Israeli soldiers.

In other news, an unknown militant group called the Ramzi Nahara Martyr Organization is reportedly claiming responsibility for today's (Sunday's) blast that injured two Israeli soldiers along the Lebanese border.

The Israeli army said the soldiers were on patrol at the time.
