On the occasion of the Martyred Intellectual Day , Mahfuz Anam , the Editor of The Daily Star has expressed his deep concern about the news that recently arrested journalists and intellectuals are being inhumanly tortured by the police in Bangladesh.
In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service , Mr Anam asked for an independent judicial inquiry into these alleged tortures on the journalists. He said that the reports on some Western News Media about the probable presence of Al Qaida has unnerved the government and in a " knee-jerk " reaction the government is being high handed. He said that no formal charges have yet been formulated against people like Salim Samad and Priscilla Raj , who were arrested as accomplices, to the recently released foreign journalists and they are still being held. He also mentioned that columnist like Muntasir Mamun and Abed Khan , have been writing against the government but in a democratic society they should be allowed to express their views.
