Bangladeshi Journalist Granted Bail - 2002-12-23

A Bangladeshi court has granted bail to a freelance journalist charged with sedition for allegedly helping foreign reporters prepare a documentary film.

The Dhaka High court granted bail for three months to Saleem Samad today (Monday). But jail authorities say they have yet to receive the court order and have not released him.

Mr. Samad was taken into custody on November 29th for helping two European journalists collect reports on an alleged al-Qaida presence in Bangladesh.

A second Bangladeshi journalist charged in the case, Priscilla Raj, was granted bail earlier this month. The two Europeans were deported after signing a statement not to use any of the footage they had taken in Bangladesh.
