A row over the deployment of army during a local body election has begun between the Election Commission and the government. The election to Union Parishad , the grass- root unit of the local body is scheduled to begin from January 25, 2003. The Election Commission , in their recent meeting , have decided to deploy army to assist police and BDR during the local body election which it apprehends is going to be troubled. The government , on the other hand , does not want Army to be deployed during the election.
This is the second time during this regime that the Election Commission and the BNP led coalition government have differed. The first difference of opinion regarding the date of election was resolved through negotiations.
