High Court in Bangladesh Expresses Concerns on Number of Issues - 2003-01-04


Different division benches of the High Court in Bangladesh have expressed their concerned on various issues. One of the division benches of the High Court has issued an order to investigate into the matters of child-prisoners in different prisons in Bangladesh. A report published in a newspaper in Bangladesh said that atleast 400 children are spending their life in a sub -human way in Dhaka Central Jail. High Court has asked the Inspector General of the Prison to explain why these children are held and how old they are.

In another order , High Court has said that the detention of Shahriar Kabir , a journalist and Shafi Ahmed , an Awami League leader are illegal .

The high court also issued a rule nisi asking the government to show cause why the arrest of Enamul Huq Chowdhury , the reuter stringer shall not be declared illegal . It may be mentioned here that Mr Chowdhury was arrested for allegedly misreporting a news on the the Home Minister where the minister had been quoted to say that the blast in mymensingh movie houses could be the work of the Al Qaida. The minister, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury claimed that he had never spoken to any reuter journalist on the issue and reuter withdrew the story , after claiming its truth for five days.
