Sheikh Hasina , Former Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition in Bangladesh met with American Ambassador Mary Ann Peters in Dhaka. She requested the Ambassador to exempt Bangladeshis from the special registration requirement in the US. Sheikh Hasina also said that a delegation of Awami League will visit US soon to meet the members of US Congress in order to discuss the matter. The US envoy told reporters after meeting Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina at the latter's residence that the decision has been made "as per a 1996 law" and is not "unique to Bangladesh "The process of stricter restrictions in immigration will go on until 2005."
She also said, "I am very pleased to have a chance to hear the views of the opposition leader on the latest development," She added, "We discussed the latest NSEERS (National Security Entry-Exit Registration System) developments."
