The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) yesterday foiled four push-in attempts by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh and Kurigram.
Tension heightened along the Lalmonirhat border as sector commander level meeting yesterday between the BDR and BSF on the zero line failed reach a decision towards resolving the issue.In the mean time More than 200 people are stranded on the India-Bangladesh border, with the two neighbors arguing over which country they came from.
Indian officials said Monday the stranded migrants are Bangladeshi nationals who tried to cross into Indian territory near the town of Satgachi in West Bengal state on Friday. But Bangladeshi officials say the migrants are Indian nationals and have refused to accept them into the country. Most of the stranded people are said to be snake-charmers and their children.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadev Bhattacharya claims that those atranded are Bangladeshis and although they have been taken care of in the no-mans land and , he insists, India would never accept them.
The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Morshed Khan has spoken to Mr Bhattacharya on telephone and has requested him to see the situation himself.
Relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained in recent weeks after New Delhi ordered a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
India says more than 20 million Bangladeshis are in the country illegally. Bangladesh says all of its nationals in India are there legally.
