16 BJP activists Die in an Accident in India - 2003-02-24


A truck accident in northern India has left at least 16 people dead and more than 25 injured.

The truck was packed with ruling Bharatiya Janata Party activists who were returning from an election rally addressed by Minister for Shipping Shatrughan Sinha.

The truck skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge at Narwa village northeast of Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh state. Legislative assembly elections in the state are due February 26th.

Police said the bodies of the victims, recovered from the spot, were being handed over to their relatives after a post-mortem examination.

The injured were admitted to various hospitals at Narwa, Chopal and in Shimla.
