US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice gave the president's message to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting at the Kremlin on Monday that also included Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov. Ms. Rice said the talks were "very good".
A senior US official in Moscow said the U-S and Russian officials also discussed Sunday's incident in which a convoy evacuating Russian diplomats from Baghdad came under fire. The official says the United States takes no responsibility for the shooting, but that, in any case, there was no intent to harm the diplomats.
The U-S diplomat says it does appear the Russian convoy came into an area where American forces were engaged in a firefight with Iraqi forces. He says the Russians were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The Russian convoy arrived in Damascus, Syria on Monday. The Russian Ambassador to Baghdad Vladimir Titorenko has accused US troops of targeting the Russian vehicles. The ambassador was slightly injured in the incident. Several others were also hurt.
