Officials in Bangladesh say rescue teams have recovered 16 bodies from the Nagchinni River about 80 kilometers north of Dhaka.
The bodies, including a woman and child, were among an unknown number of passengers on a ferry that sank during a storm late Saturday. Witnesses say some of the passengers managed to swim to safety.
It is not known how many may still be trapped in the wreckage or swept downstream because ferry operators in Bangladesh rarely count passengers and routinely ignore basic safety precautions.
