A Bangladeshi Professor Fears the Rise of Militant Religious Movements - 2003-04-14

In an interview with VOA , Dr Syed Anwar Hossain , Professor of History , Dhaka University has dreaded the rise of extreme religious movements as an impact of Iraq War. He says that although he believes that the cause behind the war is geo-political and geo-economic and he does not see it as a " conflict of civilizations" , there are many amongst the Muslims who simplistically see it as a religious conflict. Professor Hossain sees a danger in this simplistic explanation and cautions against the manifold rise of Islamic Organisations, which he thinks are intolerant to other kinds of ideas, in Bangladesh. He agrees that the civil society in Bangladesh has a role to play but this is a time 'charged with emotion' when the logic is not being listened to.
