Authorities in Indian Kashmir say at least 16 people have been killed in a surge of violence in the region.
Police say two Muslim militants, a civilian, and an army official were killed during a gunbattle in the central Kashmir district of Budgam.
The other victims were killed in separate incidents in the state.
More than a dozen militant groups have been battling Indian security forces since 1989 to end New Delhi's rule over the region. The violence has claimed the lives of more than 38-thousand people.
