Foreign Shippers Boycott Bangladeshi Ports - 2003-06-01

Trade with Bangladesh is at a standstill as foreign shippers boycott the country's ports.

Media reports say shipments are stacking up at the main port of Chittagong, which handles 80 percent of the country's exports.

The boycott began Saturday, two days after the government began requiring all foreign vessels to obtain permission to carry local cargo.

An association of foreign cargo liners (the Chittagong Feeder Trade Committee) says it will not handle Bangladeshi cargo unless the order is withdrawn. Traders say complying with the order will delay shipments and cause them to lose business.
