Democracy in Bangladesh: Problems and Prospects [Part:13] - 2003-09-15

In this episode relevance of Sheikh Mujib's Six Point demand has been discussed. Demand for a para-military force for the autonomous provinces was seen in a different light. This and other demands proved that Bangladesh was gradually drifting away from Pakistan. By March 1971, it was clear that 6 point demand was non-negotiable and it was chartered not merely for a federal type of government, but perhaps for a confederation type of government. In March, during negotiations the word "confederation" was even used giving a clear signal that the Bengalees were now asking for a whole lot more than what was originally conceived. These demands, as one knows, are the outcome of the deprivation which the Bengalees felt over the ages.
