On December 12, 1996 , a thirty-year treaty on distribution of the Ganges water was signed between Bangladesh and India . On the seventh anniversary of the treaty Awami League , which was a party in power in 1996 , believes that it was a historical treaty. On the other hand the present four-party alliance government feels that Bangladesh is not getting as much water as was promised in 1996 Ganges Water Treaty .
