Awami League Observes  Daylong Strike - 2004-02-14

Shops, schools and many banks were closed in major cities across Bangladesh on Saturday due to an opposition-led general strike, the second in three days.

News reports many people were injured in clashes with club wielding police.

The Awami League called Saturday's strike to protest police brutality in quelling the earlier strike Thursday, in which 50 people were reported hurt.

The opposition has been calling for new elections, which aren't due until October of 2006. The opposition accuses the government of corruption and blames it for rising crime rates and higher prices.
