Bangladesh Observes Strike Called by  the Opposition - 2004-02-28

Bangladesh is in the grips of its fourth opposition-led general strike this month. Many of the country's schools, stores and banks are shut today and transportation has been interrupted in Dhaka, as well as other cities. The opposition Awami League accuses Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's government of corruption and political repression, and says it is responsible for rising prices and increasing crime in Bangladesh. The opposition wants elections held earlier than scheduled in 2006. The prime minister says she has no intention of giving in to opposition demands.
