Eight Alleged Sarbahara Men Lynched in Faridpur - 2004-04-25


Eight alleged members of the outlawed “Sarbahara Party” were lynched here on Sunday morning by the outrageous villagers, taking revenge for long sufferings from extortion, plunder and rape, at Char Krishnanagar, 22 kilometres north-west of the town.

Eyewitness report said a group of villagers of Char Krishnanagar of Krishnanagar union under Sadar Upazila were fishing in a pond. The armed gang of 20 or 22 appeared there at about 8:30am and looted all the fish from them.

After looting, the gangsters in a relaxed mood were having breakfast in a nearby field.

Meanwhile, the villagers whose fish were looted were quick in mobilising the people of adjacent villages. About 5,000 men, women and children with sharp weapons, gheraoed the gangsters.Finding trouble, the gangsters opened about 30 gunfire on the villagers. But braving bullets they swooped on the gangsters and managed to hold nine of them. Others could flee.

They were beaten mercilessly. Even the women came forward and hacked their enemies with dao and boti. Eight of them died on the spot, witnesses said. Deputy commissioner Jalal Ahmed and police super Hafizur Rahman visited the spot
