Human Rights Groups Challenge Mass Arrests in Bangladesh - 2004-04-27

On Tuesday, four human rights groups challenged mass arrests in Dhaka in a writ petition to the High Court. A day before that the government halted a campaign of mass arrests in eight days. The court asked the government to explain in three weeks why Section 86 of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, under which police made the arrests, should not be declared extra-constitutional. Ain o Salish Kendro, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust, Karmajibi Nari and Jatiya Ainjibi Parishad filed the petition in public interest.
