Reserved Seats Provision for Women Challenged in Bangladeshi Court - 2004-06-20


Women leaders on Sunday filed a writ petition in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, challenging the provision of reservation of seats for women in the parliament. A High Court Division bench of Justice MA Matin and Justice Tarik-Ul-Hakim has fixed today for hearing the case. Women leaders Farida Akhter, Tasneem Siddiqui, Alina Khan, Salma Ali, Sayeeda Akhter, Seema Dash Shimu and Rokeya Rafiq Baby filed the writ petition challenging the provision made in the 14th amendment to the constitution, which was passed by the parliament on May 16. In the petition they claimed that the provision was made in violation of the constitution, infringing their constitutional rights.
