Singapore proposes body to project moderate Islam - 2004-06-24

Bangladesh Thursday accepted a Singapore offer to join a proposed eight-member nucleus steering committee that will try to remove misperception about Islam and project the religion’s ‘true and moderate image’ across the world. The initiative was put forward by visiting Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during official talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at the latter’s office Thursday. Briefing newsmen about the outcome of the talks, Foreign Secretary Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told newsmen that Khaleda ‘welcomed the idea and gladly accepted’ the offer to be a member of the new grouping.
