Hartal in Bangladesh was Less Turbulent - 2004-07-11

The dawn-to-dusk general strike called by the coordination council to protect workers, employees and enterprises passed off in a relaxed mood in the capital and elsewhere in the country on Sunday. The Shilpa-Sramik Karmachari Rakkha Samannay Parishad called the day-long hartal and a 24-hour industrial strike in mills and factories to press home its series of demands that include stopping disinvestment of industries, reopening enterprises including Adamjee Jute Mills, implementation of a minimum wage board in private enterprises, formation of a wage commission and a 40 per cent dearness allowance for workers.
