Flood in South Asia Kills More than 300 - 2004-07-16

Rescuers are struggling to reach people in remote areas of India, Bangladesh and Nepal where the worst flooding in 17 years has killed more than 320 people.

Surging rivers swollen with monsoon rains have so far displaced more than 21 million people in the region.

The United Nations children's agency says its trying to ensure clean water is available to people displaced by the floods to prevent an outbreak of waterborne diseases. UNICEF officials say they are also working to make sure needed drugs and supplies are in the region. The agency is also sending one million water purification tablets to Bangladesh.
