Bangladesh's Ziaur Rahman To Receive Posthumous SAARC Award - 2004-07-21

South Asian foreign ministers have decided to give late Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman a posthumous award for what they say was his role in fostering regional cooperation.

Foreign ministers from the seven countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation announced the creation of the SAARC award Tuesday, during a meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan.

President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in 1981. He is considered one of the moving forces behind the creation of SAARC.

Reports say the posthumous award will be given during the association's summit, next January in Bangladesh.
