Flood Damage in Bangladesh can go upto Seven Billion Dollars - 2004-07-29


Flood and Disaster Management Minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf said in Dhaka today that the extent of damage due to flood might go upto 7 billion dollars. If the flood continues for several more days, it will be difficult for the government to continue ongoing relief operations from its own resources. A UN delegation is expected to arrive in Bangladesh from Geneva on Friday to assess the extent of damage .The UN has already appealed (yesterday) for international help for the flood affected people of Bangladesh. Meanwhile the flood situation in the Bangladesh capital -Dhaka and surrounding districts has further deteriorated. However, in rest of the country the situation has improved slightly. Although due to rain (Thursday) the people’s suffering continues to grow.
