Captive American Journalist Freed in Iraq - 2004-08-22

Militants in Iraq have freed an American journalist whom they had kidnapped more than one week ago in the southern city of Nasiriyah.

Micah Garen told the Arabic-language television network, al-Jazeera, Sunday he was grateful to all those who worked to secure his release, including, he said, aides to rebel Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Mr. Garen said he was seized at a Nasiriyah market while taking photographs. He called the incident a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, an Islamist militant group has posted photographs of 12 Nepalese nationals it says it is holding hostage in Iraq.

The group calling itself the Army of Ansar al-Sunna said Friday it had abducted the Nepalese last week because of their cooperation with U.S. forces in Iraq.
