General Strike Demands the Resignation of Alliance Government in Bangladesh  - 2004-08-28

A countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal jointly enforced by the Awami League and other opposition parties on Saturday brought life to a halt for the third time in the last five days and sporadic police-picket clashes and police baton charges in different places left dozens injured. The Jubo League and Mohila Awami League called the fourth strike (dawn-to-dusk) since the attack for Monday. Twenty other women's organisations have also supported the hartal.

The main opposition AL, left leaning 11-party alliance, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) and National Awami Party (NAP-Muzaffar) called the hartal to protest the August 21 grenade attack on an AL rally in an attempt to assassinate party President and Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina and in demand for resignation of the BNP-led ruling coalition.
