More Heavy Rain Forecast for Bangladesh - 2004-09-14

More heavy rain is forecast for Bangladesh, as the country suffers through one of its worst monsoon seasons in decades.

Officials said Monday 309 millimeters of rain fell in Dhaka in a 24-hour period. Many streets in the capital are under water. Car, train, and most ferry traffic is at a standstill. Farmers are watching helplessly as rice and other crops are washed away.

Floods and landslides have killed at least 12 people, but the weather is making it hard to search for other possible victims.

In all, more than 700 people have died during this year's monsoon season. The United Nations says it will need more money to help flood victims, and has appealed to its members for help.
