Baghdad Violence Kills at Least 21 - 2004-09-23


More bombs exploded in the Iraqi capital Wednesday, killing at least 21 people and wounding more than 200.

A suicide car bomber killed seven people and wounded more than 50 outside a photocopy shop in western Baghdad where National Guard recruits were preparing their applications.

Another car exploded in Baghdad's upscale al-Mansour district near a U.S. military checkpoint. An American soldier was killed and four others were wounded.

Across town, U.S. forces battled Shi'ite rebels in Sadr City. Local hospital officials say 13 people were killed and 149 wounded. U.S. officials say 25 rebels were killed during the raid.

In northern Iraq, one American soldier was killed by a roadside blast in Tikrit, while another was killed in an attack in Mosul.
