Bangladesh Opposition Calls Mass Arrests 'Political Intimidation' - 2004-09-26

The main opposition party in Bangladesh is accusing the government of arresting thousands of its supporters as part of a campaign of intimidation.

The Awami League's General Secretary Abdul Jalil told reporters Sunday that thousands of party supporters have been arrested in government sweeps in recent days.He alleged the arrests were aimed at suppressing an Awami League rally scheduled for October 3rd in the capital of Dhaka.

On Saturday, police acknowledged arresting several thousand people nationwide since last Tuesday, but said it was part of an anti-crime drive.

The Awami League has held a series of anti-government protests since a grenade attack at an Awami event last month that killed 21 people and injured hundreds.
