Car Bombs Kill Iraqi Child; Wound US Troops in Samarra - 2004-10-20

The U.S. military says an Iraqi child was killed and 11 American soldiers and an interpreter were wounded in a pair of car bomb explosions today (Wednesday) in the city of Samarra.

Troops imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew after the blasts in the city that was recently retaken from insurgent forces.

In Fallujah, U.S. airstrikes destroyed what the military said were terrorist safe houses. The U.S. military has denied witness and media reports that one of the strikes killed a family of six.

And the aid organization, CARE International, has suspended its operations in Iraq after unknown gunmen abducted its country director, Margaret Hassan, Tuesday in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, two Egyptian telecom workers kidnapped in late September have been freed. In a strange twist, their employer says Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror group helped mediate their release.
