Arafat Diagnosis Not Expected for Several Days - 2004-10-29

A Palestinian diplomat in Paris says it will be several days before doctors there will be able to diagnose the ailing Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat.

Leila Shadid said doctors will perform a battery of tests and exams on the 75-year old Palestinian Authority leader.

Mr. Arafat arrived in France earlier today (Friday) with his wife, Suha. He was admitted to the Percy Army Hospital which is known for its specialization in blood diseases. Mr. Arafat is believed to be suffering from an unidentified, but serious, blood disorder.

It is the first time Mr. Arafat has left his crumbling West Bank compound in nearly three years where he has been effectively confimed by Israel who accuses him of fomenting violence. Israeli officials have promised that if Mr. Arafat recovers he will be allowed to return.
