A French hospital spokesman says Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is still alive, but his situation "has become more complicated" since he arrived in Paris last Friday.
Earlier on Thursday , Israeli news reports said the ailing 75-year old leader had died in a Paris hospital, prompting confusion and speculation about his condition.
Doctors have already carried out a brain scan on Mr. Arafat, a procedure to evaluate brain function. The results of the procedure have not been announced.
In the West Bank, Palestinian officials have given Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia control of some of Mr. Arafat's exclusive financial powers. Palestinian leaders also held an emergency meeting at Mr. Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah.
The longtime Palestinian leader has not named a successor and there are fears his death could spark a power struggle among Palestinian political factions.
