Palestinian Officials in Paris to See Arafat  - 2004-11-09

Palestinian leaders are in Paris hoping to see ailing Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.

But French hospital officials, who describe Mr. Arafat's condition as critical but stable, have limited visits to his bedside.

Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, his predecessor Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian foreign minister, Nabil Sha'ath arrived in Paris late Monday. The three -- all seen as potential successors -- briefly canceled the trip after Mr. Arafat's wife, Suha, accused them of trying to usurp her husband's power.

Some Palestinian leaders criticized her comments and called on her to apologize.

The three Palestinian officials also want to meet with Mr. Arafat's doctors. There has still been no official word on exactly what condition he is suffering from.
