Kidnapped British Aid Worker Probably Dead in Iraq - 2004-11-16

Relatives and British officials say Margaret Hassan, the British aid worker who was kidnapped in Baghdad nearly a month ago, has probably been killed.

In Baghdad, her Iraqi husband said today (Tuesday) he has been told about a video that apparently shows his 59-year old wife's murder. He called on her captors to return her to him dead or alive.

British officials confirmed the tape's existence, saying they had viewed it and it was probably genuine.

Al-Jazeera television said it received such a tape a few days ago, but will not air it.

Mrs. Hassan's employer, CARE International, said the entire organization is shocked and in mourning.

Mrs. Hassan spent 30 years doing humanitarian work in Iraq. If her death is confirmed, she will become the first foreign female hostage murdered in Iraq. No group has claimed responsibility for her kidnapping or murder.
