IAEA Studies Draft Resolution on Iran - 2004-11-28

After weeks of negotiation European diplomats have submitted a draft resolution on Iran's nuclear program to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

France, Britain, and Germany finalized the draft late Sunday after Iran withdrew a last minute demand to exempt some nuclear equipment from a freeze of its uranium enrichment program.

The draft calls for Iran to completely freeze sensitive aspects of its nuclear program and for further IAEA investigations into the program.

The draft is seen as a compromise between U.S. demands that Iran be referred to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions and Iranian threats to stop all cooperation with the U.N. nuclear agency.

The United States insists Iran is secretly developing a nuclear weapon -- a charge Iran denies.
