White House Calls for Immediate Release of Burmese Opposition Leader - 2004-12-02

The White House is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Burmese pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Bush administration also on thursday expressed "deep concern" about reports the Burmese government has extended her detention by one year.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy said this week that government officials informed the Nobel Laureate of the extention of her house arrest.

Earlier, 1976 Nobel peace prize winner Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland told VOA the extended detention of Aung San Suu Kyi is shameful and inhumane. Ms. Maguire also called on Burma's government to restore the civil, human and political rights of Aung San Suu Kyi and her followers.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 15 years under house arrest.
