India Cautions US Against Supplying Arms to Pakistan - 2004-12-08


India has cautioned the United States against selling F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, saying such a decision would affect the goodwill the United States enjoys in India.

Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh told parliament that the India-Pakistan peace dialogue is at a sensitive stage, and U.S. arms sales to Pakistan at this juncture would have a negative impact.

His spoke just hours before the arrival of US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in New Delhi.

India wants to buy the Patriot missile system, which can defend against ballistic and cruise missiles and aircraft.

Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have fought three wars in the past five decades, but are currently in talks to resolve several issues including Kashmir.
