The legendary Indian musician Ravi Shankar turned 85 on April seventh.
Mr. Shankar's long-life mission was to bring the music of the East to the rest of the world, and to make classical music more appealing to broad audiences. He was already a respected classical musician and a renowned master of the Indian sitar when in 1966 he introduced the instrument to the Beatles who incorporated Indian elements into their songs. His association with the group made him an international star. Ravi Shankar continues to perform around the world despite his advanced age.
He has received honors and awards from all over the world, including three Grammy awards in the United States.
