Nepal's Politicians and Human Rights Groups Demand Restoration of Democracy

Political parties and human rights groups in Nepal are calling for the restoration of democracy in the country after King Gyanendra took over the government last week and declared a state of emergency.

The Nepali Congress Party has joined other political parties in calling on the people to resist the King's moves, while human rights activists say the Himalayan kingdom is under illegal military rule.

More than 20 rights groups released a statement addressed to the United Nations, the World Bank, the European Union and individual world leaders, including President Bush.

The statement calls on the international community to stop all military support to Nepal and to pressure the king to release all political prisoners and restore communications and human rights in the country.
