The French foreign minister has embraced Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's call for a new start in trans-Atlantic relations, but says differing opinions must be respected.
Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said during a Paris news conference with Ms. Rice Tuesday that it is time for a fresh start in U.S. - French ties. Both nations strongly disagreed over the war in Iraq, with France refusing to participate. But Secretary Rice said it is time for France and Europe to put aside their differences. Mr. Barnier also called for U.S. support in European talks with Iran aimed at persuading Iran to scrap its nuclear program.
Secretary Rice says Tehran must not not be allowed to dictate conditions. Ms. Rice is making her first foreign trip as secretary of state, including stops in the Middle East and Europe.
