Israel freed 500 Palestinian prisoners Monday in a goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who faced a political crisis over his cabinet selections.
The prisoners were released at checkpoints in the West Bank and Gaza Strip early Monday to cheering crowds of Palestinians. Israel says it plans to free another 400 prisoners soon, but thousands will still remain in custody.
Meanwhile, in Ramallah, a Palestinian parliament session was abruptly suspended after several lawmakers complained about candidates for the cabinet they were meeting to approve. Several lawmakers said it contained too many ministers associated with corruption.
Officials say the session will resume on Tuesday.
