Iraqi Parliament Set to Name Talabani President

Iraqi lawmakers say parliament is set to name Kurdish politician Jalal Talabani as president on Wednesday.

Lawmakers spent weeks in talks to select the new government. They say Iraq's two vice presidents will be a Shi'ite (Adel Abdul Mahdi) and a Sunni (Ghazi Yawar). The three member presidential council is then expected to appoint Shi'ite leader Ibrahim Jaafari as prime minister Thursday.

Ahead of the parliamentary session, insurgents stepped up attacks Tuesday, killing or kidnapping at least 15 people. U.S. forces also shot and wounded a CBS journalist during a gunbattle with insurgents near Mosul.

In other developments, President Bush said Saturday's al-Qaida-claimed attack on Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison shows the terror network is still deadly and is trying to kill as many innocent people as possible.
