Bush Says U.S. Will Retain Control of Forces In Afghanistan


President Bush says the U.S. military will consult with the Afghan government on anti-terrorism matters, but said American troops in the country will remain under U.S. control.

The President made the comments at a news conference Monday following his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the White House. Mr. Karzai has recently called for more Afghan control over U.S. military operations in his country, and for all Afghan detainees in U.S. custody to be turned over to his government The Afghan leader also said he was saddened by reports of Afghan prisoners being abused by U.S. forces, but said it was the work of a few individuals and not a reflection on the American people.
