A suicide bomber killed at least 23 people Sunday in a crowded restaurant near Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone government compound.
Officials say the kebab house was packed with police and security personnel when the bomber set off his explosives during lunch. The restaurant is located 400 meters from the main gate of the Green Zone.
Also Sunday, British and American warplanes bombed suspected insurgent hideouts in and around the Western town of Karabilah. Coalition forces have been searching for insurgents in the area since Friday, and have killed 50 insurgents and captured 100 others.
In other violence, U.S. forces killed 15 gunmen near Fallujah. And car bombs killed five Iraqis in Tirkit and four in Baghdad. Earlier Sunday, gunmen killed two Iraqi policemen in Baghdad.
