Over 100 Taleban Insurgents Killed in Southern Afghanistan

Afghan and US troops backed by warplanes and attack helicopters have blasted Taleban hideouts in southern Afghanistan for a third day, killing more than 100 militants. Reports from Kabul say troops have surrounded an area straddling Kandahar and Zabol provinces, where senior Taleban commanders are said to be hiding. Afghan defense ministry officials say those holed up in the Dai Chopan area include some members of the Taleban's 10-man leadership council led by Mullah Mohammad Omar. Afghan officials say that some 150 Taleban fighters have escaped the three-day onslaught and fled across the border to Pakistan. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf spoke again by telephone to Afghan President Hamid Karzai onThursday to reassure him that Pakistan is not involved in the violence taking place inside Afghanistan. This was his second call in three day .
