Israeli Police Brace for Gaza Protest

Twenty-thousand Israeli police are prepared to block a mass protest by opponents of Israel's Gaza Strip withdrawal, while a separate military force remains positioned for a possible assault in Gaza to end Palestinian rocket attacks.

By mid-day Monday, Israeli news reports said police had blocked four busloads of protesters from leaving West Bank settlements to join the demonstration.

Protest organizers have said they would ignore a government ban on the planned march into Gaza aimed at preventing the scheduled mid-August evacuation.

Meanwhile, Egyptian mediators are holding emergency talks with Palestinian militant groups in a bid to end rocket attacks on Israeli targets and head off a threatened Israeli military retaliation.

Several mortar shells hit Jewish settlements in Gaza and nearby Israeli towns for a fourth straight day today. No casualties were reported.
